Trip 6 - Thunderbird - 2 Day, August 5-7, 2021
We should have known that trip 6 was going to be special when Brian took the 1st position in line ahead of Hayden by showing up at 9:30AM. That’s right AM. Slowly guys would get in line to form a wall of rods and tackle with many bunches of 9-10 rods apiece. People would comment that there was a lot of fishing “stuff” for so little fishermen.
I arrived at 3:30pm and took my #16 spot in line. Luke, Nick, Brian, Hayden, Ron Shrout and his guest Dave were lounging in their camping chairs, waiting for the rest of us to arrive. Mike Thompson and his wife, Susan came by to wish us luck and left to enjoy a nice dinner at the dock. At 6pm, a bunch of us walked down to the “Great Mex” for some local Mexican food and then waited for the Thunderbird to return from an overnight trip. Bill Parks and Ron Shrout spoke about when the Dana Wharf Rod and Reel club was more of a drinking club back in the 90’s. With the help of Luke Burson and a few others, it became the fishing club of today.
When Captain Jeff arrived, we had two options. We could chase the BF tuna that were southeast of Catalina Island, or we could head out to San Clemente Island to fish for the local YT. Jeff had returned from his overnight with some success at San Clemente catching YT. The BF tuna were very iffy, but it was an option. It came to a vote and the tally favored YT at San Clemente Island.
After getting our bait that turned out to be so-so, we left the harbor and motored out to the island.
Day 1
As it turned out, fishing for YT was the right call. A few of us began fishing at 5:30am with Caption Jeff anchored up against the reef at Pyramid Head. Nothing happened until 7am, when a switch went off and we found ourselves with 4-6 fish hooked up often with YT. These fish were found on the surface with flylined bait and surface irons. There were no rats in this school, as we landed 18-25lbers with regularity. But some of the guys found even bigger fish that they couldn’t turn and there were many that were lost to the reef. By 10:30am, we had boated 76 YT.
Chris Ramsey was having a memorable day with 11 fish boated in that flurry, one of which ran into his surface iron and weighed in at 33lbs.
We decide to make a move, and picked at a few more YT. Captain Jeff decided to move the boat back to the other side of Pyramid head later in the afternoon, and we landed another 51 YT with some of the hookups getting rocked just like before. Again, these were quality fish. Roy landed one that topped the scale at 34.8lbs, and we thought it would be the jackpot winner, until member Jeff gets picked up and lands a YT weighing 35.5 lbs on the scale, and measured 44” long and 24 ¼” girth, calculated 32.4lbs. This wins the jackpot for the day and also earns Jeff a patch for Day 1.
Day 2
After a discussion with Captain Jeff, Luke informs us that the BF tuna fishing has been very slow, so we decide to park overnight at the island, and continue our carnage of YT on Day 2. At 7am, the YT show up again, and this time there is a huge contingent of other boats in our space. There are even little skiffs that motor up to our chum line, frustrating the crew.
As we pick at the YT, Brian Upcraft picks up one on the surface iron, and after a pretty tough battle, he finds himself on the bottom, fighting to save his iron from the reef below. Unfortunately, the fish wins and he is left with only shredded line.
Soon after, there is a boil in the corner, and Brian is encouraged to toss his bait in that direction. He tosses his bait, but it seems to be too late. However, 20 seconds later, he’s on again, and he can tell that he’s on to something big. After a good fight and avoiding the reef, he lands a “Huge” YT, weighing in at 41lbs, measuring 25”x45”. It’s so big, he could put his fist in its mouth. It’s the biggest one of the 27 boated YT that come over the rail on Day 2. We also released an addition 5, so in the end we boated 152 YT on the trip with 5 additional caught but released.
At 1:30pm, Captain Jeff, surprises us with a decision to take our last 4 scoops of bait to see if we can pick up some BF tuna. We start motoring towards the southeast side of Catalina Island to see if we can find some foamers. After two hours, we run into the fleet of 15-20 boats trolling an area with marks of BF. We see a couple jumpers, so we toss some of the bait left in the tank to see if we can bring them to the boat. On one of the stops, Jeff and Nick pick up BF which are estimated to be about 20-22lbs. Luke had one at the boat, but it rolls and saws him off before Captain Jeff can get a gaff into him.
Cody is bit on 20lb test line, and the fight takes longer than he wishes, but in the end he boats a 15lb yellowfin tuna. With no more bait, and just a 2 ½ hours to the dock, our trip ends at 5pm.
Congrats to Chris Ramsey, who boated 24 YT, and Cody added another 14, making the team of Ramsey’s total of 38 YT boated.
Captain Jeff and crew get a gold medal for an epic trip of YT fishing topped off with a couple BF and one YF tuna.
Tight lines………. Mike Higa
